In many Eastern cultures, hair carries profound symbolic meanings - representing vitality, dignity, identity, and spiritual continuity. It extends beyond aesthetics and functions as a bridge between the individual, family, and society. Mutual draws from this cultural significance by physically connecting the dancers through their hair, creating a tangible limitation that echoes the constraints people encounter within themselves, with others, and within the structures of daily life. Within these bonds, the dancers constantly negotiate, adjust, and recalibrate their movements, seeking balance between individuality and collectivity. When direction falters, tension arises; when actions fall out of sync, relationships become entangled. The work reveals how humans struggle within the confines of circumstance—pulling, resisting, supporting, and ultimately striving for care, cooperation, and coexistence. Through these physical metaphors, choreographer Yun-Chi Lai (Mai) illuminates the delicate dynamics of connection, portraying how fragility and interdependence shape our shared existence.
