Maria E Andin slams her bass with her hand and her voice breaks through the air like glass. Her message is as clear and crisp as her vocals and holds you, as if you are in the palms of her hands.
Her gentle, soulful music beats and reverberates through the sinews of your body, with themes of objectification and the true love for her brothers, which strike directly to the heart of things.
She asks to be defined. Yet, sings of how she’s realised she has changed over time. Her roots are in a jazz band, she has blues in her soul and folk songs in her heart. The music is still evolving. In the immediacy of the moment she explains how she only finished one song, the last she played us whilst on this tour.
There is no need for definition. This doesn’t need to be put in a box and labeled. I think it would die. This is music that needs to be alive.
I was talking to some others about what I have seen so far this Fringe. One expressed surprise that a lone bass and a voice could work.
This isn’t only a bass. It’s one woman, it’s her voice and a bass. What more do you need? If two sticks make a beat why not Four strings?
