There are thriving comedy scenes in nearly all countries in the world - and as you travel you'll find that the English, Spanish, French or whatever you studied in school can be a passport to a whole new experience onstage that can make you a better comedian.

This on-your-feet workshop is full of practical exercises with the goal of getting your joke brain working in other languages and giving you the skills you need to succeed at your first-ever English / Swedish / German / Japanese / anything goes open mic.

In two hours you'll know
* How joke structure and humor devices change across languages (or don't!)
* The do's and don'ts of using translation tools like Deepl or AI,
* How to use bidirectional writing to punch up existing material
* How to approach that first set in a language you've never spoken onstage before.

Note: This workshop is best for those who already have some experience doing standup comedy. But it remains friendly to aspiring comedians - because you can't build a set in a whole new language without revisiting standup 101 concepts like joke structure, laugh triggers, persona and topic selection.

Organizer: Erica Jean (@ericahatesfun) is a traveling polyglot comedian who has performed standup in 7 languages (English, Spanish, French, Thai, Indonesian, Japanese and Italian) in 30 countries and is no stranger to being the stranger onstage. She performed in Italian just two weeks after moving to Italy and in Japanese over twenty years after studying (and forgetting) the language. Swedish next? We'll see!
